Professional Experience

Senior Staff Software Engineer

Start :
End :

February 2006
November 2008
Lead Engineer
Led 4 engineers in the testing of GUI Functionality for all Motorola CDMA Phones sold at Sprint including the L7c, U6c, RAZR, KRZR, RAZR2, SLVR, Z6, and ic902. Tested phone GUI Functionality as well as non functional text, images and layouts. Tested regression, performance and 4 large applications: Favorites, Sprint Ahead, On Demand and OneClick. Prevented the customer from seeing almost every issue which led to Motorola being rated the number one cell phone vendor for software quality at Sprint.
Test Design
Created approximately 1,500 tests per my lead that caught 99% of all GUI software defects.
Test Management
Created the testing estimations, schedule and resource allocations for each release and phone using Microsoft Project.
Software Development / Automation (Screen Commander)
Designed and implemented a Windows Forms automation application in .NET Visual C# (over 8,000 lines of code) that I named “Screen Commander” that interfaced to the cell phone to automate the GUI testing which cut the test time down from 3 weeks to 3 days.
Software Development / Automation (Twiki Generator)
Designed and implemented a Windows Forms automation application in .NET Visual C# (over 1,000 lines of code) that I named “Favorites Twiki Generator” that read a Microsoft Excel file with tabs laid out in a relational information format and generated a Twiki page that combined the relational information which greatly improved the communication between teams who heavily relied on the output to complete their software features.

Lead Engineer for N-1 CDMA System Migration
Led 4 engineers in testing the migration (~500 Tests) from one Supercell release to the next release. Created a new process of testing the CDMA System migration from release N-1 to release N which was incorporated into the standard of testing this migration.
Lead Development Engineer of a Software Bug Fix Management Application
Designed a Web application to automatically install, remove, track, and manage software fixes on the Unix Based Motorola CDMA Supercell System. I led a team of 4 engineers to develop the application which consisted of HTML, Oracle SQL, C, and Perl languages.
Lead Engineer of New Testing Approach (Exploratory Testing)
Led a team of 4 engineers to test using a new method that I devised based off of many elements from the works of James Bach, a world renown tester who Motorola hired for consultation in 2004. Created a web based application in HTML/Perl to record the results and display test reports. This testing approach found 13% of the total software bugs reported in the department but only had 6% of the total test engineering staff involved in this testing demonstrating its effectiveness.
Mentored 9 People
Along with my other responsibilities, I mentored 9 engineers during my career at Motorola. I was a key contributor in a team that created a training program that new engineers followed, which made their learning structured and productive.
IP Integration Testing
Designed and executed tests to verify new packet based Internet Protocol communication for the Cellular Network. Discovered a design flaw in the Motorola CDMA R16.0 System IP architecture that prevented the release from being delivered with disastrous results. I worked with Compaq, GateD, and internal Motorola teams to resolve the design and implementation problems. I created an automation application in Perl to test the final solution. The problems were solved before going to the customer.
Lead Engineer for Feature Interaction Test Scenarios
Led 3 engineers to create feature interaction scenarios for Motorola CDMA release R16.0. The team analyzed all features for R16.0 and then was assigned scenarios to create. These scenarios verified that the implementation of one feature did not affect the functionality of another related feature.
Lead Engineer for CDMA System Release Compatibility Feature
Led a team of 10 engineers to test release compatibility between 3 different major releases. Worked with every feature champion to determine compatibility issues between the different releases. I created a Perl application to test accurate database downloading of the Base Stations. Over 130 software bugs were discovered from this testing.
Lead Engineer for Remote CBSC (Central Base Station Controller) Feature
Designed tests to verify the functionality of a remote CBSC. This feature reduced the amount of equipment that operators in China would normally have. Rewrote the requirements after initial testing and worked with development and the makers of the equipment, Zhone, to resolve design and implementation problems. I traveled to Beijing, China to train and familiarize the Motorola Limited Research & Development team on the operation and testing procedures.
Sprint STIC Lab Testing
Personally demonstrated software bug fixes in front of Sprint management and engineers at the Sprint Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. I made several trips to prove the functionality of the Motorola CDMA software through upgrading their system and executing tests. This effort was critical to the signing of the CDMA Release 8.3 contract totaling close to $500 million.
sc6xx series CDMA Base Station Testing
Designed and executed tests to improve the quality of the Motorola sc6xx series Cellular Base Stations (BTS). Found over 100 problems with this series of BTS. Worked with field engineers to resolve problems found in the field.
Field Problem Resolution
Worked on resolving various field issues that occurred in the United States. Designed and executed regression tests that prevented defects from reaching the customer.
Senior Lab Assistant

June 1992
February 1997
Senior Lab Assistant
Responsible for the management of approximately 145 lab assistants and 31 computer labs on campus. Made decisions for the problems that arose in the labs. Continually updated and organized the lab operations. Provided ultimate technical support to the lab assistants.

Software Developer / Project Manager Assistant / Inventory Manager
Responsible for setting up computer systems to keep track of the various job activities at several job sights including Cleveland, Ohio, Wheeling, West Virginia, and Terre Haute, IN. Traveled to these locations for extended periods of time to implement the computer systems. Designed inventory software and upgraded the current computer systems at the home office. Contributed to the company receiving ISO-9001 compliance for inventory maintenance and by meeting the specifications in the applications that I developed to manage the inventory. Developed a special inventory application for the expansion of the McCormick Place in Chicago, IL that eliminated all lost materials.
